Steering and Footwork | Sharon White

Five-star eventer Sharon White explains exercises for improving young horses’ steering and footwork. Her students begin their warm-up by getting the horses on the aids with walk-trot-walk transitions. Next, the riders let the youngsters figure out their footwork over ground poles on a straight line. Sharon then changes the exercise to a crossrail bounce, emphasizing that they keep the balance and rhythm on the approach. When they expand to a course, she lets the pairs jump each fence individually first before putting a course together. Sharon is a five-star eventer who has competed at the Kentucky, Lühmuhlen and Pau CCI5*-L events. She has represented the U.S. on FEI Eventing Nations Cup teams and earned team silver at the 2023 Pan American Games. Sharon runs her training and sales business out of Last Frontier Farm in Summit Point, West Virginia.
