VideoToward the end of March, we asked our Practical Horseman community: If gas prices remain high, will you think twice about the number of shows you compete in with your horse this spring and summer? About 90% of respondents said that gas prices will definitely affect their show plans, while 10% said they would continue their show schedules as planned.
Several respondents noted that if gas prices remain high, they would be severely restricting the number of shows they participate in and that their students have also mentioned the need to cut back. Others are looking to more economical options like carpooling and not showing just one horse.
Outside the U.S., dressage riders in Australia reported that with gas prices averaging $9 to $12 a gallon purchase is being restricted in certain areas and many are not able to travel to competitions at all or are minimizing their participation. Other dressage riders in Australia said that some competitions are being canceled altogether.
